Haymaker Farm is located in beatiful Northeast Nebraska and is home to the recipient herd that supplies Cedar County Veterinary Services with the surrogate mares needed for their embryo transfer program. Haymaker Farm mares are first and

foremost selected for their calm disposition and gentle nature. Most are either quarter horses or paints and are very easy to handle- some are even broke to ride! For many of the mares here, becoming a surrogate mother has given them a second lease on life as many were horses that were otherwise unwanted or no longer useful to their previous owner.

These mares will at some point carry very valuable cargo, so their health, well-being and care is of highest priority. A full vaccination and parasite prevention program, routine hoof care and dental work are part of the protocol for the mares at Haymaker Farm.

During the time that the mares are cycling and being assigned to donor mares, they are handled daily and brought in for indiviual feeding and inspection. Once pregnant, they are evaluated weekly and turned out into a larger pasture setting. At 45 days pregnant, the recipient mare is leased to the donor mare's owner or agent and remains theirs until the following year when the foal is weaned. At that time, she is returned to Haymaker Farm. Although most clients chose to take their recipient mare(s) home with them, some elect to leave them at Haymaker Farm until she foals.

Please enjoy the fruits of their "labor" and thank you for taking the time to visit Haymaker Farm! Remember you are always welcome to stop in and visit!
